Companion robots and robot pets: what to check before buying

Compare desktop companions, wheeled robot pets and coding kits. Understand bundles, apps, privacy, charging, support and realistic expectations.

Source-based guidance. No hands-on testing or performance ranking.

Some robots earn their place by making you smile. An animated face, a curious movement or a small coding experiment can be the whole point. Choose the experience you want to return to after the first exciting afternoon: company at a desk, games on the floor or a project you can keep changing.

This is a research-based guide to LivingAI EMO GO HOME, KEYi Loona Petbot Premium, Petoi Bittle X V2 and Sphero BOLT+. We have not tested their interactions or long-term reliability, and we do not claim that any model provides therapeutic, care or security benefits.

Choose between a companion and a coding project

EMO GO HOME centres on desktop interaction and includes a Home Station for self-charging. Loona is a wheeled robot pet designed around movement and interactive play. Compare where each will live and the type of interaction you actually want, rather than treating every expressive robot as interchangeable.

Bittle X V2 is an educational robot dog with assembly and programming options. Petoi lists block coding, Python and C++. Sphero BOLT+ offers a different learning format: a programmable rolling robot. If your main aim is coding, compare lessons, compatible devices and the time available to help a beginner.

  • Desk companion: check usable surface area, charging placement and edge guidance.
  • Floor companion: check room layout, surfaces, access and a suitable play area.
  • Learning robot: check assembly, programming level, lesson materials and supervision.

Read the exact bundle before comparing prices

A family name can hide meaningful package differences. The EMO GO HOME bundle differs from the standard EMO package. Our Loona link selects Premium, while other editions may show different dispatch dates or accessories. For Bittle, establish whether you are buying a kit, an assembled robot or an optional-arm configuration.

Make a short contents list: robot, charger, dock, battery, play accessories and anything needed to use it. For classroom purchases, also distinguish a single robot from a multi-robot pack. A product photograph is not a complete statement of what will arrive.

Ask what works today and what needs the internet

Separate the available functions from a future-update promise. Check supported languages, compatible phones and computers, account requirements and Wi-Fi bands. Ask which interactions work offline and which rely on an app, a cloud service or a separate subscription.

If a demonstration depends on an online AI feature, investigate its current availability and limits in your region. Do not buy solely because a future release is mentioned. Consider how enjoyable the robot would still be if that one feature changed, became unavailable or required a payment.

Make camera and microphone choices deliberately

Read the manufacturer's privacy information for the device and its companion app. Find out which functions use a camera or microphone, what is uploaded, who can access remote features and how to delete an account or reset the robot. A sensor specification alone does not answer those questions.

For a family or shared workspace, agree where the robot will be used and who can control it. Check age guidance and the supervision expected for moving parts, charging and programming. A personable robot is still a device with defined capabilities; it should not be assigned responsibility for a person's wellbeing.

Plan for the less glamorous parts of ownership

Check charging access, replacement batteries or servos, cleaning instructions and the route to repair. Ask whether troubleshooting needs your own computer and whether software recovery instructions are available. A technically curious owner may enjoy that involvement; someone seeking simple play may prefer less setup.

International storefronts need an extra check. Confirm delivery to your exact address, the displayed currency, final freight and any return-shipping responsibility. EMO's Australian delivery eligibility is not confirmed by our catalogue. Recheck the selected seller and variant before making a gift deadline depend on it.

  • Watch ordinary setup and interaction demonstrations, not only a promotional montage.
  • Check the support documentation before purchasing to see whether it suits your skill level.
  • Record promised features and the included bundle at the time of ordering.

A little more clarity

Questions before choosing.

Is a robot pet the same as a programmable robot dog?

Not necessarily. A companion may focus on ready-made games and expressive interactions, while an educational dog may focus on assembly and coding. Compare the specific software, controls and learning materials.

Do companion robots need a subscription?

There is no single rule across models. Ask which functions are included, which need internet access and whether an AI service, app feature or connectivity plan has a recurring charge.

Can a consumer robot dog guard my house?

Do not assume that. The companions and educational kits covered here are not presented as complete protection systems. Professional patrol robots use different hardware, service arrangements and deployment assessments.
